Butterfly Release Party

When we bought our caterpillar castle at the butterfly farm a couple of months ago we talked about when we would get to release the butterflies. Somehow this event started getting called the butterfly release party. So of course Makena and Megan started talking about who all they were going to invite to this "party." One of our two caterpillars died while making it's chrysalis. And I told them that we should just make it a family party since we only had one caterpillar left. :)
We had a beautiful female monarch butterfly. The male butterflies have two dots on their wings and ours didn't have dots. Megan called her Butterfly Pixie Dust and Makena wanted to call her Holla (as in "I'll holla at ya later.") Our girls are definitely not lacking in the imagination department.
 She loved our hydrangea!
Adios Holla aka Butterfly Pixie Dust! We tried to trick her into staying around by releasing her near our butterfly bush in the backyard. Alas she wanted to spread her wings and fly.
The girls and I have planted a few things this spring. I love mixed flower pots. I really like the begonias and the wave petunias that we picked for this pot. Part of the reason I took the picture is so I can try to copy this next year.
The girls and I also planted two tomato plants and two cucumber plants earlier in the spring. The tomato plants are Megan's and the cucumber plants are Makena's. When we chose our vegetable plants I told them they had to pick something they would actually eat. We already have quite a few tomatoes on our plants. We'll have some grape tomatoes and some larger tomatoes. We've gotten some blooms on our cucumber plants so we're hoping to get a few cucumbers, too. I'm surprised that we've actually been able to keep these plants alive. Had I known what good gardeners we were (wink wink) I would have planted some other veggies, too. We may try planting a few more things next year.
