In December, Makena's Kindergarten class did what her teacher called "an extensive research project" on polar bears. Every day Makena came home with a random bit of knowledge about polar bears. They read books, watched videos and wrote stories about them. And then one day, I picked Makena up from school and she was especially excited. She said, "Guess what! I'm going to be on the news!" Makena's school has a school news channel run by kids.....mostly 5th graders. Everyday the classes watch a TV in their classroom and they're reminded of events going on that day, the lunch menu, weather, etc. Makena's teacher chose 5 students in her class to read the stories they had written about polar bears. The moms of the kids were notified beforehand so we could come watch and take pictures. The morning of the news, Mrs. Richardson and the kids went down to the library where they film the news. They went into a separate room and the moms watched on a TV in the media center. Mrs. Richardson introduced herself and talked about the project and then the kids took turns reading their stories, with Makena going first. Mrs. Richardson thinks it may be possible to purchase copies of the news so I'm going to contact the librarian about getting a copy. It was really cute!
Makena's school also has a way for the kids to leave a legacy by painting a ceiling tile that will be placed within the school. Students that want to participate pay $20 (that goes toward the PTA) and have to submit a sketch to be approved. I guess they do this in case some of the older kids want paint something that wouldn't be appropriate. Makena is our little artist so I wasn't surprised when she wanted to participate. She decided she wanted to paint a clown. :) She had a lot of fun making the sketch and decorating the ceiling tile. When we dropped off the tile they asked what class Makena was in. They had it put it up right outside her classroom so now she gets to see it everyday and show it to her friends.
